China, Japan, South Korea vow stronger trade ties

Updated: Apr 4

Trade ministers from China, Japan, and South Korea pledged to deepen economic ties and ensure the smooth flow of goods, a few days before new US tariffs were introduced. Meeting in Seoul, the officials discussed a potential free trade agreement but did not report major progress. The talks come as Washington prepares to impose a 25% levy on car imports, affecting major exporters like Japan and South Korea and reciprocal tariffs on sectors including semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. China has responded with retaliatory measures, while Japan and South Korea plan emergency support for their automakers. The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a regional trade pact that excludes the US.
