China to inject USD56bn into three state banks to bolster economy

China plans to inject at least CNY400bn (USD56bn) into three of its largest banks in the coming months as part of efforts to stabilise the economy, sources familiar with the matter said. The Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of Communications, and Postal Savings Bank of China will receive fresh capital under a broader recapitalisation plan first flagged by regulators last year. The Ministry of Finance is expected to fund the injections through special sovereign bonds, with the total package potentially reaching CNY1tr across major state lenders. The move aims to strengthen banks’ capital buffers and encourage lending amid economic headwinds. Shares of the three banks rose in Hong Kong trading following the news.
