Digital payments surge in the Philippines, exceeding central bank goals

Digital payment adoption in the Philippines is accelerating, with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reporting that 56% of Filipino adults were part of formal financial institutions in 2021. Digital transactions surged from 1% in 2013 to 52.8% by 2023, surpassing BSP's 50% target under the Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap. The BSP highlighted the benefits of digital payments, including convenience for consumers, cost efficiency for businesses, and enhanced transparency for government revenue collection. The BSP is also promoting digital payments through educational campaigns and partnerships with other government agencies. Offline digital payment options are under consideration to address connectivity issues in remote areas, with a reminder for users to practice good cyber hygiene to avoid scams.
