Financial industry leader to head Japan’s Keidanren for first time

Japan’s biggest business lobby, Keidanren, plans to appoint Nippon Life Insurance Chairman Yoshinobu Tsutsui as its next head, current chairman Masakazu Tokura said. Tsutsui would be the first leader from the financial industry, marking a break from Keidanren’s traditional practice of choosing chiefs from manufacturing. The 70-year-old vice chair, who will assume the top role at a general meeting on May 29 next year, succeeds Tokura, 74, whose term ends in late May. Tsutsui, who became Nippon Life president in 2011 and later its chairman, led the insurer’s expansion through acquisitions such as Mitsui Life Insurance. He also heads the GX Acceleration Agency, set up this year to promote green investments. Historically, Keidanren chiefs have mostly come from manufacturing firms.
