Goldman Sachs lawsuit opens door for Malaysia to review 1MDB deal

Malaysia sees Goldman Sachs’ lawsuit over the 1MDB scandal as an opportunity to reassess a previous settlement. Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan expressed that the litigation could lead to revisiting the agreement, emphasising efforts to recover assets tied to 1MDB. The scandal involved the looting of the 1MDB fund, leading to global probes and Goldman admitting to the largest foreign bribery case in U.S. history, with settlements over USD5bn. Amid disputes over a required payment under the 2020 agreement, Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim seeks to renegotiate terms, citing Goldman’s lack of cooperation. As of last year, Malaysia had paid MYR48.06bn (USD10.1bn) towards 1MDB debt, with a remaining obligation of a MYR5bn sukuk maturing in 2039.
