Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau met with representatives from 10 local business chambers on Monday to address the impact of new US tariffs on the city’s exports. Yau said the measures would have short-term effects but stressed that the US accounts for only a small portion of Hong Kong’s total trade, with ASEAN being the city’s second-largest export market since 2019. He called the US move a violation of WTO rules and urged the business sector to remain united. The government pledged to support affected businesses, help them enter new markets, and modernize industries amid shifting global trade dynamics. Yau reaffirmed Hong Kong’s commitment to free trade and its role in the multilateral trading system.
