HKEX names former SFC chairman as new head

Carlson Tong Ka-shing, a seasoned accountant and regulator, has been named the new chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), Asia’s third-largest stock market. He replaces Laura Cha Shih May-lung, who retires after a six-year term. Tong, a former Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) chairman, is tasked with steering HKEX amid challenges such as declining liquidity and new listings. His term, set until 2025, aims to enhance HKEX’s global financial hub status by diversifying products and improving trading mechanisms. Cha, now a senior adviser, reflects positively on HKEX’s international growth during her tenure. HKEX is strategising to overcome recent setbacks in market rankings and profits, with a focus on seizing future opportunities.
