Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz has urged Hong Kong to diversify its economy beyond finance, citing global risks and deglobalisation. Speaking at a University of Hong Kong forum, he highlighted the importance of education and healthcare sectors. Stiglitz emphasised the city’s potential to thrive through internal collaboration and innovation. Richard Wong, HKU’s deputy vice-chancellor, remained optimistic about Hong Kong’s role as a bridge between China and the world. He suggested increasing public housing and attracting talent to boost incomes. Vincent Lo and Bernard Chan echoed the need for Hong Kong to evolve as a “super value creator” and maintain its role as a key connector in the region, supporting smaller enterprises in entering mainland markets.
