Investors in Japan have filed a new lawsuit against Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group’s brokerage unit over losses from Credit Suisse’s high-risk bonds that became worthless following the bank’s rescue in March 2023. The lawsuit, involving 14 plaintiffs, was submitted to the Tokyo District Court, demanding JPY1.37bn (USD8.5m) in compensation. This marks the third group litigation initiated by Yamazaki Marunouchi Law Office against the firm, bringing the total to 106 plaintiffs seeking JPY8.3bn. The case centres on whether the brokerage adequately informed clients about the risks associated with the bonds, including events that could trigger a write-down. The plaintiffs argue that the bonds were sold inappropriately to regular investors, including two companies, violating suitability principles.
