KKR eyes entry into Japan’s private credit market

KKR & Co. is exploring the possibility of entering Japan’s private credit market, aiming to offer an alternative to traditional bank loans. Hiro Hirano, head of KKR Japan, emphasised the importance of the firm taking this initiative independently. The move is part of KKR’s broader strategy in a country where the domestic loan market is heavily dominated by major banks, and most direct lending has traditionally been conducted overseas. This strategy aligns with KKR’s wider investment focus in Japan, where approximately 40% of its Asian investments are made, particularly in companies looking to divest non-core units. Additionally, KKR plans to expand offerings to institutional and high-net-worth investors in Japan and has already formed a joint venture with SBI Holdings Inc.
