Several ASEAN nations consider BRICS membership after Malaysia's interest

Multiple ASEAN countries have shown interest in joining the BRICS economic bloc following Malaysia's announcement of its intention to become a member, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat during the Minister's Question Time, he emphasised that ASEAN seeks to avoid becoming an arena for major power struggles and will focus on regional economic development and strengthening relationships among member nations. Efforts include enhancing the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, improving digital networks, and expanding power grids, initiatives expected to boost the regional economy, especially with Timor Leste's pending membership. As ASEAN chair in 2025, Malaysia plans to promote itself as an attractive investment destination and will host the ASEANGCC+China Summit.
