Singapore offers to host 2030 APEC summit

Singapore has offered to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2030, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on Saturday at the conclusion of this year's summit in Lima, Peru. The move aims to contribute to more inclusive growth amid rising geopolitical tensions and waning support for free trade. As a member of the 21-nation APEC—which includes major economies like the United States, China, and Russia—Singapore seeks to reinforce trade and investment links despite global challenges. The last time Singapore hosted the APEC summit was in 2009. Wong highlighted concerns over declining global support for globalisation and free trade, noting that increased barriers are not the solution. APEC leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system and advancing economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region.
