Taiwan’s President-elect Lai names Cho Jung-tai as new premier

Taiwan’s president-elect Lai Ching-te announced the appointment of Cho Jung-tai, a former chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party and his close ally, as the new premier. The announcement was made on Wednesday, with Lai set to be inaugurated on May 20. Cho, who previously served as the secretary-general of the Taiwanese cabinet from 2017 to 2018 under Lai’s premiership, played a significant role in Lai’s recent presidential campaign. Citing Cho’s communication and problem-solving skills, Lai praised his ability to foster consensus across party lines. Cho emphasised a people-first agenda and highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation between the executive and legislative branches. His appointment aims to foster dialogue with the opposition, following the party’s loss of its parliamentary majority.
