Thailand’s insurance regulator tightens actuarial standards

Thailand’s Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) plans to establish a screening committee to suspend or revoke actuarial licences to safeguard insurance firms and policyholders. Ayusri Kambamlue, assistant secretary-general of the OIC, emphasised the need to protect insured benefits and uphold actuarial standards. Actuaries must apply actuarial science principles with expertise when calculating insurance reserves, which are crucial for a company’s financial stability. The committee, comprising OIC representatives, associations, and academics, will monitor actuaries' performance. Ms. Ayusri noted past liquidity issues in insurance firms due to improper reserve calculations during the COVID-19 outbreak, underscoring the need for stringent oversight.
